Transcendental Meditation: Objective Research on TM

Although the TM Organization (TMO) boasts over 500 scientific studies
[1] on their TM and TM-Sidhi programs, the studies from which they quote have been performed primarily by the TM Organization or by people they sponsor at Maharishi University of Management [2] and at other universities.

What kinds of problems have been discovered with the TM Organization- sponsored research?

Failure to control for set effects, lack of double-blind controls, refusal to submit raw data, allegations of suppression of negative evidence, of fraud and of "gross scientific incompetence", and other problems have been identified in the research promoted by the TM Organization, bringing a number of their "proven results" into question (and worse).

Contrary to TMO research claims of a "unique" state of consciousness achieved through TM practice, objective research reveals that TM does not induce a unique fourth state of consciousness, and only demonstrates relaxation benefits comparable to self-hypnosis or sitting with eyes closed. However, these other relaxation practices have not demonstrated the negative effects reported by TM practitioners -- which range from headaches and muscle twitches to anxiety, depression and mental breakdown.

Rather than a "simple, natural, relaxation technique", TM appears to be a potentially damaging practice touted with exaggerated claims, and dispensed without adequate warning measures. Even drugs that provide some benefit are not without warning labels for side effects; and those demonstrating excessive risk are conscientiously withdrawn.
