State of Iowa
1991 - 1998 Crime Statistics
'Maharishi Effect': Maharishi University of Management, located in Fairfield, Iowa

The Maharishi Effect is defined as "one percent of the population practicing the Transcendental Meditation Program in any city reduces the crime rate, accident rate, and sickness rate" and "establishes a new formula for the creation of an ideal society, free from crime and problems, and with this, Maharishi envisions the dawn of a new age for mankind -- the Age of Enlightenment."[1] "The meaning of this term was later extended to cover the influence generated by the group practice of the TM-Sidhi® program."[2]

In 1978 the TM Organization announced, "Discovery of the Extended Maharishi Effect: the square root of one percent of the population practicing the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Program together in one place produces coherence in collective consciousness, promoting positive and progressive trends in society."[1]

The state of Iowa has been the recipient of the "Extended Maharishi Effect" since about 1979, after group TM-Sidhi practice was introduced on the Maharishi International University campus in Fairfield, Iowa, in 1978.

According to the "Extended Maharishi Effect" formula, only 164 people practicing the TM-Sidhi program together are required to cover the EME for the state of Iowa (2,678,261 x .01 = 26,783 x square root = 164).[3]

After the introduction of the TM-Sidhi program, there have been at least 164 people in Fairfield regularly practicing the TM-Sidhi program together since 1979. In fact, the number of people required to cover the EME for the entire United States, was established in Fairfield in 1982.[4] Also the 1994 MIU Catalog states, "MIU students have the opportunity to learn Yogic Flying, practiced twice daily in MIU's Golden Domes by 1600 students, faculty, staff, and members of the Fairfield community." Currently, there are an estimated 2,000 TM practitioners living in Fairfield (20% of the local population.)

An objective analysis of crime data, however, for the period of 1991-1998[5], shows an overall increase in violent crime and property crime for this period, both for
Fairfield/Jefferson County and for the state of Iowa.

By contrast, the neighboring states of Wisconsin and Arkansas show an overall decrease in violent crime and property crime for the same period.[6]

CRIME STATISTICS
for State of Iowa
1991 - 1998

A summary of the Iowa crime statistics, reflecting the difference between the 1991 crime indexes and 1998 crime indexes shows:

Adult Group "A" Violent Crime (as listed): Increase of 175%
Adult Group "A" Property Crime (as listed): Increase of 125%
Adult Drugs/Narcotics Crime: Increase of 573%
Domestic Abuse: Increase of 256%
Juvenile Group "A" Crime: Increase of 273%
Juvenile Group "B" Crime: Increase of 187%

This look at crime rates in the state of Iowa is for a recent eight-year period; but by 1991, the "Extended Maharishi Effect" had already been established for Iowa for at least 12 years, and by the end of 1998, the "Extended Maharishi Effect" had been in place for at least 20 years.

Also, Iowa has far exceeded EME requirement of the square root of 1% of the population involved in group TM-Sidhi practice -- with the largest group of TM-Sidhi practitioners in the United States, since 1979. By 1994, Iowa was reported to have 1600 people regularly practicing the TM-Sidhi program -- approx. 10 times the required 164 people; and by year 2000, Iowa (in Fairfield) was reported to have approximately 2000 people involved in TM-Sidhi practice.

The crime indexes are based on the number of crimes per 100,000 population. Group "A" crime includes "violent crime" such as murder, rape, robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault, etc.; "property crime" such as burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, etc.; and also crimes such as narcotics and drug equipment violations. Group "B" crime includes bad checks, disorderly conduct, driving under the influence, liquor law violation, etc.
